Don't ask me why but I am slowly becoming a sucker for affordable contour kits!

I am still a fan of my ABH Contour Kit but it's always nice to try something new and a little bit more affordable and I'm a make-up junkie so you know I'm gonna buy most of the new products out and about anyway.

When I saw NYX UK had stepped up their make-up game I had to pick up a few products to test out for myself.
I've always been a fan of NYX but the UK site was shockingly bad and I mean shockingly!
Thankfully Team L'Oreal have pulled their finger out and now many of NYX's newest releases can now be found online and even in certain stores!

One of the items on my wishlist was the NYX Highlight & Contour Pro Palette | £18.00.

The kit itself holds 8 refillable pans.
Of the 8 I believe 2 are of a pearl finish and the rest are mattes, I say I believe as from my swatches it's difficult to really see the finish of the pearls.

The 8 shades are described as the following:

Ice Queen - Pearly Pale White
Soft Light - Matte Nude
Cream - Matte Soft Yellow
Nectar - Pearly Soft Peach
Tan - Matte Soft Brown with Slight Red Undertones
Toffee - Matte Neutral Brown
Sculpt - Matte Taupe
Hollow - Matte Deep Brown

Let's just get right to it.
Was it this palette worth adding to my collection?
The answer is NOPE!
To be honest I wish I had left it alone.

These shades are not suitable for anyone of a dark/deep skin tone.
If you're olive skinned you may be able to use this but anyone darker - it's just a waste of money.

As you can see all of the highlighting shades are faaaaar to bright for my skin tone - notice how they all appear white, even Nectar.
Tan and Toffee look near damn invisible on my arm and Sculpt is too light.
The only usable shade here is Hollow and mate, I could have just bought a dark brown eye shadow to do Hollow's job.

I know some of you might be thinking, why would you buy this if you can see the colours aren't deep enough, but with a brand like NYX I'd expect them to recognise and acknowledge deep/dark skin tones when they create a universal pro product and I'm disappointed that they did not this time around.

Would I recommend this palette to my brown skin beauties...hell to the no, thank you and bye.

This one gets a thumbs down from me NYX.

The only thing I can do with this palette is try to use it as a nude eye shadow palette because God knows it's useless to me for it's actual purpose.

Sometimes being a beauty junkie has it's cons and this one set me back £18.

If you're looking for an inexpensive contour kit I'd recommend either Sleek's Contour Kit | £6.99 or Barry M's Contour Kit for Medium/Dark Skin Tones | £6.49 instead as they both cater to dark skin tones.
For my deeper skinned sisters try opting for a deep dark matte brown such as a brow powder as these are usually cool toned and rich in colour, you can then warm this up with a deep purple blush for more definition.

  1. Thank you for this review, Nathalie!
I'm quite tempted by contouring palette like this one, but I think Sleek would be better... I've read nice review about this brand!

    1. I love the Sleek contour kit, it's much cheaper and I feel like the highlighter shades are more forgiving as well!

  2. Definitely agree, not for darker skin tones. I'm olive with yellow undertones and it works perfectly for me. I don't think I needed it though but suckered in as you do. I don't bother with the highlighters ( Ice Queen or Nectar ) but I do like the contour powders and the palette itself but didn't need it. xo

    1. Yeah I agree, I don't think anyone needs this many contour powders but we makeup lovers will find a way to justify buying it! I think I can use Hollow and one of the highlighting shades sparingly but besides that this is a bust for me which is disappointing because I'm a fan of NYX.
